Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
